Street Theatre Project
East Bay Conservation Corps Charter School
Visual, Musical, and Performing Arts in North Oakland
The
East Bay Conservation Corps Charter School Street Theatre project
was a year-long program designed to integrate the arts into a service-learning
project. Twenty 4th-grade students studied hunger and homelessness
in their community and then, inspired by what they learned, created
a street theater production composed of fine art, music and puppets.
Throughout
the school year, the 4th graders engaged in a variety of community-based
activities, including working in a local soup kitchen and visiting
a food bank. They also met with puppeteers who use their art form
as a vehicle for social change. Drawing from these experiences,
students then created an original street theater production. Under
the direction of their music teacher, they wrote a script and composed
lyrics and a musical score. They worked with their art teacher to
design and build giant puppets to appear in their play. As the program
finale, they presented their production in a "Celebration of Service"
event for their peers and the larger community.
