Storytelling Teaching Literacy
Martin Luther King Elementary School

Storytelling helps students develop skills in listening, reading and writing, speaking and dramatization. It is also an effective way to teach children about diverse cultures and races, while building self-awareness and self-esteem. Oakland Fund for the Arts has joined in partnership with Martin Luther King, Jr. School, an elementary school serving many disadvantaged youth, to increase literacy among its students. Professional storytellers work with students throughout the school year, culminating in several performances written and produced by the students.
