MuST (Music in Schools Today) Achieving Through Music Program
Elmhurst Community Prep Middle School, Elmhurst District (2009)

This therapeutic music intervention program supports at-risk children and youth—many of whom have been exposed to trauma—typically by using percussion circles. The purpose of the program is to lower the incidence of youth violence and other at-risk behaviors, and to improve academic performance and life skills. It has been medically discovered that in trauma survivors, the left-brain and right-brain integration is inhibited. Cutting-edge research is showing that drumming, using balanced left and right hand rhythms in a therapeutic setting, can help heal trauma. Participants are able to experience creativity, camaraderie, teamwork, self-discipline, a sense of purpose and community, and—most importantly—joy: a vital part of any healthy childhood.
