Luna Kids Dance

OFFTA funding supported this dance education program working to bring the first K-5 scope and sequence dance program to an OUSD (Oakland Unified School District) elementary school. Best practices developed at this model site will be used to develop other standards-based dance programs in OUSD. Children explored self control, body awareness, locomotion, body part differentiation, tempo, and range of movement while improvising with the elements of dance—space, energy and time. The classes meet the California VAPA (Visual and Performing Arts) standards, as well as the national dance “create, perform, respond” standards. During each class students have the opportunity to create their own dance movements, perform their dances to their peers, and critically reflect on their own work as well as respond to the work of their peers.
