LitLinks Program
West Oakland Community School

At West Oakland Community School, Oakland Fund for the Arts underwrote a "LitLinks" program created and administered by Children's Book Press (CBP) of San Francisco.

This program brought CBP authors to the school to help 6th-graders explore the concept of community through various creative writing, music, and fine art projects.

In the writing workshops, taught by author Toyomi Igus, the students learned to develop a creative voice; under the direction of illustrator Maya Christina Gonzalez, they created pastel self-portraits.

The final project combined video and music. Students wrote and performed original songs, which were included in a video they created documenting their experiences at West Oakland Community School.
