First Annual OUSD Jazz Workshop and Festival
Musical Arts at Skyline High School in the South Hills

Nearly 100 students from three middle and two high schools participated in Oakland's first-ever all-city jazz workshop and festival, held at Skyline High School. The event began in the afternoon with five workshops led by prominent local jazz musicians.

Each workshop focused on a different instrumental group. John Handy worked with students who played reed instruments, Kalil Shahid with trumpet players, Wayne Wallace with trombone players, Darrel Green with drummers and Art Khu with piano, bass and guitar players.

After dinner, jazz bands from five Oakland schools gave a public performance in Skyline's Farnsworth Theatre. The bands included Skyline High School Jazz Band, directed by Ted Allen; Westlake Middle School Jazz Band, directed by Randy Porter; Elmhurst Middle School Jazz Band, directed by Helena Jack; Oakland High School Jazz Band, directed by Lori Willis; and Bret Harte Middle School Jazz Band, directed by Duane Wurm.

At the evening's end, all five jazz bands came on stage to perform together as the "First-Ever Oakland Schools Jazz Festival Very Big Band." The evening concluded with rousing version of Dizzy Gillespie's "Night in Tunisia."
