Circus Theatre
Prescott Elementary
Performing Arts in West Oakland
Prescott
Circus Theatre, founded by Aileen Moffitt at the Prescott Elementary
School, is a highly regarded clown training and performance program
for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Moffitt designed the program to promote
leadership, skill training and academic achievement. Participants
in the Prescott Circus Theatre learn circus arts, including juggling,
stilt-walking and acrobatics, as a means of building confidence
and fostering cooperation, discipline and trust.
Students
must audition to join the Prescott Circus Theatre. The 50 individuals
who are accepted must consistently demonstrate a high level of commitment
to the physical and emotional challenges of the program, and to
one another. Prescott clowns quickly learn that good teamwork is
essential for success.
Funds
from Oakland Fund for the Arts were used to increase the
number of participants in the Prescott Circus Theatre and its number
of public performances, as well as to assist with program expansion
to other schools. Prescott Circus Theatre performs year-round at
public schools and community events throughout the Bay Area.
