Ceramics Program at Hawthorne Elementary
Visual Arts in the Fruitvale District
In
1998, Oakland Fund for the Arts helped create the ceramics program
at Hawthorne School by purchasing an electric kiln for the school
and funding the cost of graduate student ceramics teachers from
California College of Arts and Crafts (CCAC). The program remains
very popular with parents, students and staff. As in previous years,
the last year's ceramics program was composed of day and after-school
classes.
In
the day class, the ceramics instructor worked with six 1st and
2nd grade-classes (120 students total). Each class met once a week,
for a total of four hour-and-a-half sessions. The goal of the day
class was to introduce basic sculpture and glazing techniques
and teach students about the kiln firing process. Students experimented
with ceramic sculpture and manipulation by creating pinch pots,
tiles, and small objects.
The
after-school segment was offered in two 15-week sessions. Each session
served 30 students in grades 3-5. As in the day class, students
learned basic ceramic and glazing techniques, and gradually fine-tuned
basic skills and expanded on their sculpting and glazing abilities.
Last year, they created a veritable cityscape with sculptures of
buildings, plant life and cars.
This
program helps lengthen student attention spans, improve tactile
skills, and encourage follow-through. It also allows students to
develop their creativity and explore a new mode of self-expression.
At the end of each session, students are invited to display their
work to the school community at the Eagles' Nest Showcase and at
School Site Council meetings.
