ArtPLACE

Prescott Elementary (Prescott-Joseph Center for Community Enhancement), West Oakland (2008 and 2010)

ArtPLACE is a school-wide, school-day arts program for K-5 students. Teachers can sign up for an all year program that includes painting, collage, sculpture, and drawing, or for class by class special instruction in building missions, constructing dioramas, or science as art.

With 3D construction as part of the art curriculum, 4th grade students were led into more complex structures and instruction: the concept of architecture as sculpture, and architectural styles as reflected in available building materials (California missions).

Other projects included a Black History comic book for 5th graders, and kite-making for 3rd graders. OFFTA grants have paid for art materials and a portion of the art teacher’s salary.a
