Artist-in-Residence Program
Fruitvale District 2002
Urban Promise Academy
Working
with the concept of art and community activism, visual artist Roxanne
Padgett explored issues of ethnicity, culture, and congruity
at the Urban Promise Academy.
In
a program organized and administered by the Museum of Children's
Art (MOCHA), each student had an opportunity to cultivate an
awareness of his or her individual right and responsibility to perceive,
judge and create alternatives to his or her environment.
The
artist collaborated with all 165 6th- and 7th-grade students
at the school for 2 hours per week for 18 weeks, using
issues related to their core English and Social Studies curriculum.
In this way each participating student received more than 36 hours
of arts instruction that culminated with a 3-week exhibition
at the MOCHA gallery.
Jefferson Elementary School
Oakland
Fund for the Arts and the California Arts Council funded a 16-week
artist-in-residence program for special-needs students in grades
K-5 at Jefferson Elementary School.
The
program was organized and administered by the Museum of Children's
Art (MOCHA). Thirty-two students learned painting and cartooning
from visual artist Doug Calderon and dance and theater from dancer
Christine Chen.
Students
learned about movement through both visual and performing mediums.
They took a field trip to MOCHA, where their visual artwork was
exhibited, and they designed their own t-shirts in the artists'
studio. At Jefferson, they created a site-specific mural, and presented
a creative movement performance for their classmates.
